The Q24 Fleet

Q24 Page 4

There are many beautiful Q24s sailing about, so it’s only right and proper that we have a page devoted to them.  So here we are!   If you own a 24, you’re welcome to post.  I’m happy to add pictures, too.  To post a new comment, you’ll have to scroll to the very bottom of this page- all the way down.  I’ve managed to change the formatting to display just the newest comments first, so scrolling down is no longer so tedious.  All of the older comments are still here though.  Just follow the link at the bottom of this page.

  1. I have for sale a 1987 Quickstep 24 on a solid tandem wheeled trailer with a 2012 Yamaha T9.9 outboard motor with low usage, all in good condition. The Q24 comes with 3 mainsails, two genoas, jib, two storm jibs and a spinnaker. The boat and trailer are currently stored at Point Bay Marina on Lake Champlain. Asking $12,500 for boat and trailer.

Contact me at bgallupvt@gmail.com for more information and photos of the Q24 and trailer.

  2. I’m seeking a source for 4 replacement sheaves for my masthead. I believe the mast is c. 1980. The current white acetal(?) sheaves measure diameter 2.14″ (54.5mm), width .55″ (13.9mm) and bore .38″ (9.6 mm). there’s just a bit of leeway for sizing. I’ve been through Ronstan, Schaefer and Allen catalogues with no luck so far. Thanks for any leads, fair or otherwise.

    1. John the masts and associated fittings were sourced from Dyer Mast & Rigging. Quickstep 24’s use their DM500 mast section. They’re still doing business but appear to have been sold as the website is different indicating a sale. It was not responding well for me as I write. They always had every part for the mast. The spar (DM500)/spreaders/masthead/lights/mast base with or without hinge/ sheaves too as I recall. All original equipment. Let me know how you fare.

    2. John, you could also easily make your own sheaves. Buy Delrin rod on Ebay. Several sellers available for 2″ or 2 1/8″ stock.
Slice off cookies of desired width with a band saw or even a mitre box and a steady hand . Draw an X on the end and drill the center hole of correct size. Cookie with a hole in the middle now.
Place a good fitting bolt into the hole and nut it on.
Put the bolt in an electric drill. Secure your drill..vice, clamp, knees even.
Wrap sandpaper around a 1/2″ dowel and spin the drill up and use the sandpaper to cut the desired groove into the circumference of the cookie.
      Delrin cuts nicely.
      Maybe a half hour?

  3. Hello all! I am looking into buying a new motor as my current one is dated (1989) and having more and more issues. Looking online an 8hp is recommended for the weight but the new 8hp motors does not fit without having to make modifications. I was wondering if a 6HP would be adequate enough for ocean sailing and if anyone has had this experience? Thank you!

      1. Have always used 8HP Yamaha on my Quickstep. Although I seldom need full throttle, a trip through Woods Hole will make you appreciate the additional push over the 6HP.

        1. After I sold my Quickstep, new owner used a 9.9 Tohatsu. Have to admit it was quieter and smoother(twin) but caused the stern to “squat” with extra weight. As I sailed on and off a mooring so seldom needed the extra power, I liked the 6 as it had ample power and allowed the boat to sit on her lines.

        2. Did you cut a piece off of your rudder to fit the 8hp motor? I’m concerned about traveling through woods hole also and would like to make an 8hp fit but they seem to be much larger than the old two stroke motors.

          1. Did not require any alteration to accommodate the 8HP. A simple adjustment of the pitch when mounting on the transom will keep the leg from touching rudder. As noted in an another post, added weight is the only real negative but I don’t honestly find it to be an issue – except when pulling engine from well to clean accumulated marine growth.

        3. Do you use a 20” or 15” shaft? Looking at it I could see the 15” fitting but I was worried it may be too short in certain conditions

        1. There was a boat for sale with Triad trailer and outboard in Vermont last season. He was asking $14,500. Not sure if it sold.

    1. Don’t have one for sale, and don’t know how much experience you have had with one, but I have one in Annapolis if you want to check one out “in the flesh”. Have only had since June. Nice sail today, by the way!
